Joomla with Free ASP.NET Hosting - ASPHostPortal.com :: Joomla SEO Tips You Must Know

clock May 26, 2015 06:21 by author ben

Among the millions of websites running on Joomla, tremendous numbers of sites follow the effective Joomla SEO tips. As every website owner desires to improve his web presence on the Search Engine Results Page (SERP) consistently, developers implement the effective SEO strategies on their site. Being a developer, if you are not getting the improved results, you must be looking for some Joomla SEO tips.
After introducing the top WordPress SEO tips, we will illustrate some of the more effective Joomla SEO tips in this article. These tips are followed by millions of Joomla developers. You must know these strategies to improve your website ranking on the SERP.

Top 10 Joomla SEO Tips

Listed here are the SEO strategies for Joomla sites that you must know.

Meta Description and Title on Home Page

As your home page is one of the most important parts of your website, you must ensure that it contains attractive title and meta description. For this, you should navigate to the SH404SEF URL manager and open the home page meta. On the next screen, you will find many fields, where the page title and Description tag are the imperative areas to be filled up with relevant content. You may skip all the other fields, as Google doesn't takes these information into consideration while ranking.

Article Meta Description

When your target audience searches for content related to your niche, the first thing they notice about your site on the SERP is your article's title and meta description. As the title relates directly to the content, the relevancy of meta description ascertains whether the visitor will click through your link. Therefore, you must write a user-friendly as well as SEO-friendly meta description and insert the keyword at a relevant place.

Image Alt Text

Search engines do not have the ability to understand the images on your site. Keeping this in mind, every content management system comes with Image Alt Text that is accessed by the search engine. Hence, when you add an image on your articles or blogs, you should explain the relevancy of the image. However, you should make sure that the principal keywords are used naturally and not stuffed inappropriately.

Internal Linking

Internal Linking Link-building has been an imperative SEO strategy in the last decade. But with the implementation of the new SEO guidelines, using too many external links can create a negative impact. Therefore, instead of creating external links, you should opt for internal linking. It is the type of linking where you offer the links to other articles on your site from one article. Hence, you should practice the internal linking strategy by creating links to multiple relevant articles.

Merge www and non-www prefix

In Joomla, you get an option to choose from the prefix; i.e. whether the “www” will be added to your domain or not. Moreover, if you remove the “www” prefix and someone else uses the address with the prefix, there can be an issue with duplicate URL. Hence, to play safe, you should configure the presence of prefix from the Google Webmaster Tools and redirect the visitors to your address, with or without the www prefix.

Avoid Keyword Stuffing

The Google Penguin SEO update is quite strict with the use of keywords in articles and blogs. The articles you publish on your Joomla site must be relevant to the topic and the keywords must be used in appropriate places only. In addition to this, you should not overuse the keywords in the content because it is treated as a Black Hat SEO technique.

Sitemap

Joomla SEO Tips - SitemapSearch engines appreciate when you offer easy navigation on your site. However, the sitemap accessed by human traffic cannot provide any assistance to search engines. Keeping this in mind, you should create two sitemaps on your Joomla site; one for human traffic and another for search engines. This would provide assistance to both, visitors and crawlers, and hence your SEO ranking will improve.

Prevent Duplicate content

Duplicate content has been in the list of Black Hat SEO strategies for years. If any of your articles or blogs have plagiarism issues, your SEO ranking can degrade drastically. Hence, you must always check your articles for plagiarism before publishing them on your site. In fact, you should make sure that your content, address of the web page and title are unique.

Use SEO Extensions

As Joomla is an advanced CMS and offers compatibility with plugins and extensions, there are tons of SEO tools for this platform. You can install various plugins such as SEO-Generator and SEOSIMPLE, that boosts up the SEO strategies of your site. However, it is recommendable that you must only install the most appropriate tools. Installing too many extensions on a Joomla site may slow down the loading speed and, ultimately, degrade the performance of the site.

Reduce Social Links and PDF files

Social links and PDF files distract the visitors from exploring your Joomla site. As your primary aim should be to drive traffic on multiple pages of your site, you should treat social links as a secondary option and reduce the usability of PDF files. This is because the visitors may forget to explore your site once they find the social links. Similarly, they may spend too much time on reading the PDF file, although it doesn't give you any assistance in SEO.

Joomla Hosting - ASPHostPortal.com :: How to Solve Joomla Cannot Access Private Section

clock May 22, 2015 06:01 by author ben

Got the error "You cannot access the private section of this site." on one of my sites when trying to login as a "normal" user in front-end.

This was a pretty interesting issue to find and resolve. It's an database 'error' of sorts that is pretty simple to fix. First of all this is all due to a parent<-child condition that has gone horribly wrong in an update or something else. Most likely you will find this issue in the table "assets". You will need to find your database prefix fist of all, easiest found in the configuration and the option "$dbprefix". I will call it "prefix_" here for ease of typing.

So to find if you have this issue you can run the following in an sql manager of your choosing (mysql or phpmyadmin shoulden't make any differents, i did it in the cli mysql)

SELECT id,parent_id,title FROM `prefix_assets` WHERE parent_id=0;

If you find that there are multiple rows then hit the above do the following

UPDATE `prefix_assets` SET parent_id=1 WHERE parent_id=0 AND NOT id=1;

You should also verify that the "Root Asset" has id 1 and parent_id 0

SELECT id,parent_id,title FROM `prefix_assets` WHERE id=0 OR parent_id=0;

this should give the result

id    parent_id    title
 1    0               Root Asset

if not run

UPDATE `prefix_assets` SET parent_id=0 WHERE title="Root Asset";

Joomla with Free ASP.NET Hosting - ASPHostPortal.com :: 10 Tips For Joomla SEO

clock May 11, 2015 06:14 by author ben

The things you need to know about Joomla SEO

In this post, I talk about ten important factors you should consider when optimizing your site.
For me, SEO is about what you do every day. SEO is a long term strategy - not a quick fix. If you implement these factors, you will see increased search engine traffic to your site. All without breaking your neck performing them ;)

1. The TITLE tag is very important

Take time creating your TITLE tags – this is the tag Google takes most notice of so include your main keywords if possible. The Title tag is what shows up in the search engines as clickable headlines for your page.
Make sure the TITLE tag includes at least your main keyword. I also believe that most websites can omit the name of the site itself from the TITLE. It's in the URL anyway and will dillute the uniqueness of the TITLE. Read more about Joomla meta tags.

2. Don't stuff your pages with too many keywords

Most webmasters know that you need to include the most important one or two keywords for a page multiple times in an article if you want to compete for positions. However, this must not be overdone. Keep in mind that the text must be readable and fluent for the reader, not stuffed with keywords to 'please' the search engines. It annoys your readers and can backfire by excluding you from the search engines.
To analyze your content, consider using a tool like Scribe SEO for Joomla. It can help you remember all of the content 'rules' that impact SEO.

3. Get lots of inlinks

Inbound links to your pages are very important. Try to get inbound links from relevant sites. Still, the best way of getting inbound links is to create compelling content that the readers want to share with others. Use Digg, StumbleUpon and other services to spread word of your pages. If the content is good, bloggers and other site owners will link to it. This is why Wikipedia has such great rankings. People are linking as crazy to it, because it contains relevant information about almost everything.

4. Internal and external linking

Consider where you link, both internally and externally. Do you have a page with content relevant to what you're writing about at the moment? Link to it internally - it will improve your rankings. You can see examples in this very post.
Linking externally, you might want to consider using the rel="nofollow" tag in your links. Too many links from a page can be bad for SEO, so setting some of them to nofollow can be good. To understand more about how Google consider links.

5. Pay attention to anchor texts

Linking does not mean linking randomly. To get the most from a link, consider the text you are linking from (the anchor text). For instance, a link saying the product will be less efficient than a link saying iPhone 4. The word or phrase you link from will be the one Google will improve the ranking for. So, the page you link to will get a boost for the word iPhone 4 when you create a link on the word (to put it simply). For links on images, the alt tag will be considered as the anchor text for the link.

6. Create an XML Sitemap

An XML sitemap is an XML file showing all pages in the site for easy inclusion on a search engine. If you have just a few pages, you can use a service like xml-sitemaps.com to create it for free. Or you can install (my favorite) XMap to create the sitemap automtically from your Joomla menus..

7. Use the robots.txt File

The robots.txt file is in your site root folder. It contains info on which folders should be indexed and not. I can also include information about your XML sitemap.
One tip: Remove the line excluding the Joomla /images/ folder. Otherwise, none of your site images will be indexed in the Google image search.

8. Use Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools will give you tools to analyze and improve your site. Using these tools, it's very easy to spot any place in your site where you might have missed the title and/or description. You can also submit your sitemap XML and test your robots.txt file, to mention some. Read more about Google Webmaster Tools and Joomla.

9. Track and analyze

To improve your site, you need to track the traffic and analyze it regularly. I use Google Analytics for reporting. Take a look at the reports frequently. You should consider things like:

  • Traffic sources (search engines, direct, reffering sites)
  • Bounce rate (the number of people seeing only one page)
  • What keywords are generating traffic (get ideas for content and consider creating more to get additional traffic on these words)
  • Most popular pages (what do they have in common?)
  • Most common exit pages (how can they be improved?)

Using the segmentation tools of Google Analytics, you can combine these and other factors to see how people interact with your site. This can form the basis for your future SEO work.

10. Do your keyword research first

To know what words and phrases to optimize for, you need to know what people are searching for. You can use the Google Adwords keyword tool, or a specialized software like Market Samurai.

Joomla with Free ASP.NET Hosting - ASPHostPortal.com :: How to Choose the Best Joomla Template for Your Website?

clock April 27, 2015 07:46 by author ben

Joomla website templates can help you create a website easily — even if you don't have design skills, time or a huge budget. They can save you time, effort and money. But with thousands of Joomla website templates to choose from, you might be confused about how to choose the perfect Joomla website template for your website?
As you consider different Joomla website templates, you must be clear about your website goals. Once you know what you want to say and what you want visitors to do, you're ready to choose the template and create a website!
Today, I will help you find your answer through some easy steps with simple questions. If you focus your goals, you can make an informed decision before creating a website.

1. WHAT TYPE OF WEBSITE DO YOU WANT TO BUILD?

Joomla Website templates determine a site's structure, look and feel. Are you creating a single page? Do you need a responsive website? Or, do you want to open an e-commerce website which requires a catalogue of thousands of product images? If you are a freelancer or working at and agency, so you need to build a portfolio website? While figuring out what kind of site you need, there are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Decide what kind of color scheme you need to match your brand
  • What template genre are you going for?
  • Take a closer look at what similar industry websites are doing.
  • Before you decide if a template is the right one for you, dig into it a little.

So the first thing is you have to know what your objectives are when running a website and choose the types that will meet your needs.

2. WHAT LAYOUT FITS YOUR NEEDS?

The layout determines how the information will be structured when you create a website. The key to using Joomla design templates is choosing the one that works exactly as you need and want without making too many changes. Determining what you need will help you when you demo some of these templates. One distinction that it helps to know is that a lot of functionality with templates has been moved to their underlying framework. Look at the structure of the home page and the interior pages when you create a website. Will you include graphics, tables, and links? Do you like the navigation bar at the top or to the side? These are your choices.

3. WHAT ABOUT THE PRICE OF THE TEMPLATE?

After choosing the perfect Joomla website template which meets your needs, the layout works exactly what you want, so what about the next step? Check the template pricing.
There's not one simple way to understand pricing with template companies. Some offer unlimited templates for a flat monthly rate, some charge a yearly rate for a set number of templates, and some charge you a one-time fee. To help with your search you can start by asking yourself a couple of questions:

  • Am I going to need long-term upgrades, support, or a new template from the same company? - This determines the subscription length you can plan for.
  • Am I hi-tech enough to handle template issues if they arise? - Helps you decide if you need technical support.
  • Am I going to need more than just a template? Maybe an extension or added functionality? - Choose whether you can make your website with just a template or if you will need added functionality.
  • How much does my budget allow me to spend? - This could be the easiest way to decide on a template. If you have to be under a certain budget, then your choices will narrow down.

4. WILL CUSTOMER SUPPORT BE THERE TO HELP?

The final step is you should check the after-sales service - the last but also the most important one.
No matter how "simple to use" or "easy to update", website templates must be supported by an expert you can talk to if you run into any problems. 24/7 support is invaluable when you create a website – if you've been up all night in a marathon effort to get your Joomla website up and running, it can be crushing to find you've skipped a simple step and can't publish online. Make sure you can reach someone via phone, email or online chat so that you really can get your website uploaded "in an instant", any time of the day or night.

  • In admin go to Menus -> Main menu
  • Select New from the top left corner
  • Click on “Menu item type” to define the type of this menu item. Select Article ->Single article from the popup.
  • Click “Select article” to define the article this menu item points at. Select one of your articles you created from the popup list.
  • Type the menu item title (will appear on the page, should be short, e.g. Welcome!)
  • Alias field can be left empty to let Joomla create the alias based on your written menu item title.

  • Menu location should be “Main menu” and status should be “Published”

  • The rest of the settings can be left as they are on the right side by default.

  • Click on Save & Close and create a menu item for each of the articles (pages) you need.

Joomla Hosting - ASPHostPortal :: 4 Steps to Building Joomla Website

clock March 12, 2015 06:39 by author ben

This tutorial will help you set up your Joomla website from scratch. I'll walk you through 4 easy-to-follow steps:

  • Step 1: Create a website structure.
  • Step2:  Add content and articles
  • Step 3: Create a main menu
  • Step 4: Add modules to your Joomla website.

A Joomla website only needs 4 main pieces to operate succesfully: Articles, Menus, Modules and Templates. There could be a 5th piece here, Extensons. But, extensions are by no means required to run a successful Joomla website. I'll cover extensions in a future tutorial.
For the sake of this tutorial, we'll be looking at a completely vanilla Joomla installation. Don't worry, you'll be able to follow along just fine if you've already installed the sample data.

Step 1: Site Structure

If you haven't yet planned out the organization of your site, then stop here, get a pen and paper, and sketch up a rough outline like the example below. Focus on the main menu for the top tier, with each box being a menu link representing different sections of the site. If you've already done that, then way to go! You just knocked out one of the 4 steps without even knowing it!
Now that you have a general idea of your site's flow, let's head back into the Joomla administration panel.

Step 2: Adding content via Articles

All of your site's content will be stored in what Joomla calls "articles". First, we need to create article categories. Go to Content > Category Manager. You should see a default category named "Uncategorized". You can use that for static pages like About Us, Our Services etc.. Named categories are useful if you're planning on having a lot of articles, like a blog site or news site would. Don't worry about category descriptions, most Joomla sites don't display them on the front-end. Let's create a category called Latest News, which will be appear like a blog in the front-end.

Once you have a your categories in place, we can create articles. Press the Articles tab or go to Content > Article Manager & press the New button. All you need to do here is

  • add an article title,
  • select a category, then
  • add your article text.

I usually create a "Welcome" article to serve as the home page, and an "About Us" article; both uncategorized. I'll also create a few articles to place in the Latest News category. When you're done, press Save and close the article. Congratulations, we're half way through! Only 2 steps to go

Step 3: Create a Main Menu

Now that our content is in place, we need to build a navigation menu. Go to Menus > Menu Manager. There should already be a Main Menu installed by default, containing a link to your Home page. This is called the "Default menu item."

Select the Menu Items tab. If left alone, this Home menu item will display your featured articles in a blog layout. You can easily change that if you wish to display a single article as your home page. Simply click on Home then press Select next to the Menu Item Type field. In the popup window, select Articles > Single Article. Next, on the right under Required Settings, press the Select/Change button. In the popup window, choose the full article you wish to display as your home page.
Let's create some more menu items.

This is a good time to refer back to your organization chart from step 1. Let's create a link to our "About Us" article. Select New and follow the same steps as we did for the Home page, choosing the Article layout and selecting an article. We'll create one more item to house our Latest News category. For this we'll choose the menu type under Article > Category Blog.

Step 4: Position the Menu on the site

The last step is to place the menu on the site. Joomla templates use modules to place content in various positions on the page. Go to Extensions > Module Manager. Press New and select Menu from the Module Type popup window. Give it a title like Main Menu, and press the Hide Title button.
Next, select a module position for the menu. It's important to know that each Joomla template has a unique system for naming it's module positions

Let's add one more module. Go back to the Module Manager main screen and press New. This time, select Latest News. This module will display the titles of the most recent articles from a category. Give it a name, and select a position.select the option "Only on the pages selected". Under the Main Menu tab, uncheck everything except the Home Page then press Save. Congratulations, the basic setup is complete.
